From Washington to Uganda

We’ll have another flu update later today (If/When CDC releases new information) but for right now, here’s an interesting link: Yesterday, 15 doctors and nurses from Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC began a trip to Kampala, Uganda. Once they reach Kampala, they’ll set up in the main hospital and begin to perform Congenital Cardiac Surgery.

Not only are they performing the operations, they are training the Ugandans to diagnose and treat heart problems. Progress is being made – while the Americans are in the Operating Room just in case something goes wrong, more and more the Ugandans are actually doing the surgeries. Progress is slow, but steady – you don’t learn how to do a heart operation overnight. And you don’t get really good at it without practice.
