The Will to Win

“Rocky’s hurt, but he’s on his feet and he’s on the move!” -Rocky IV

The young lady in Florida – her name is also Eliza, I didn’t mention her name previously because I had Heart of a Warrior ready to post and I didn’t want to confuse anyone – is still in the hospital. Physically, she’s hanging in there, fighting the good fight. But all this time in the hospital is getting to her. The feeling of being stuck, missing her friends and family and favorite things, and even the inability to eat and drink since being intubated is starting to get her down.

“But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward.” – Rocky Balboa

Fighting a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) is a lifetime thing: Every day is another battle. Sometimes it’s a minor skirmish, when you know that you should get out and walk but you just don’t wanna. And sometimes it’s war, when the doctor sighs and says “We’re going to have to do something about this soon. I’ll get you an appointment with a surgeon.”

And sometimes it is a sneak attack, when your day starts off normally and then suddenly things go haywire, and you’re on your back in the Emergency Department with a lot of people shouting questions at you. And in those moments, we aren’t fighting a day to day battle anymore. The fight is hour by hour, when you are put to the test and you have to reach down and call on all your inner strength.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, but it is a long way off, and you feel like you are moving so slowly. But you have to just keep going. Never lose sight of your goal and never give up.  And we’re all right here pulling for you.

Be the hero that we know you are.

“He is not human. He is like a piece of iron.” – Rocky IV
