The Way It Is

To the tune of “The Way It Is” by Bruce Hornsby and the Range

Their child was born in ’32
But the doctor delivered bad news
“Your child’s heart isn’t right
I don’t think he’ll live the night
And there’s nothing that we can do.”
As he shook his head the doctor said

That’s just the way it is
Some things we can never change
They say that’s just the way it is
But don’t you believe them

They could fix a heart in ’44
Sick kids could live a little more
But it only goes so far
Said “Hey Dad I don’t understand
Why I can’t run and play like the other kids can
And none of my friends
Have all of these scars.”
He said, Son

That’s just the way it is
Some things will never change
They say that’s just the way it is
But don’t you believe them

In 2010 I heard a friend
“We’re going to live to be a hundred and two.”
And while I know he’s right we still have to fight
Because there is still so much to say
And so much left to do

And that’s just the way it is
We’ll work to make things change
That’s just the way it is
You’d better believe it!
